Summary: Time is Money
Comment: Seems like people either love or hate this service. I guess it all depends on how valuable your time is.
Is it so stupid to take your car to a carwash (can't you pay the teenager next door to do it?)
Same thing here. We have people clean our homes, cars, do our laundry, taxes, etc etc because many of us have better things to do and can afford it.
I just read a review about a guy with 5000 CDs. A professional processing company like Riptopia can do that in a week. Let's see the next door neighbor do that!

Summary: Useless Service
Comment: If you have an mp3-Player, the assumption is you know at least how to connect your player to a PC and use software like iTunes to load mp3 files to your device. Thus you already know more than necessary to also rip your CDs with easy-to-use, free-of-charge ripping software such as audiograbber, winamp etc.. My son does it everyday, he is 8! Ripping 1 CD takes him about 1 minute, so 100 CDs will take a bit over 1-1/2 hours. So why would anyone need Riptopia, pay $120 and go through the hassle of packaging & shiping off his/her CD collection, waiting for weeks just to receive back ROM-discs with mp3s encoded at unknown/random bitrates which in turn have to be transfered back from DVD to PC. What a useless service!

Summary: Rip-off-topia!
Comment: I can see how enticing saving some time would be... I own over 5,000 CD's and ripping them has taken years... But $100 for 100 Cd's is a crime, considering the low bit rate Riptopia transfers at. You could hire the kid down the street to do the same job for a quarter of the money. Save your $100 and spend it at your local independent music store for 8 more CD's!!

Summary: Amazing how one decision can make life so simple
Comment: Before I used Riptopia, I ripped 20 CD's myself. It took about 4 minutes per CD. Let me be clear, that was just the time it took computer to change the music into digits after I hit the "rip-button" on window's media player. So, you have to add the cumulative time it takes to open every CD, put it in the computer get the process going again, then either sit in the office or go kill ten minutes. Altogether, two hours of wasted time. Only problem, I actually OWN 200 CDs!! One other thing, my wife has some music that Windows Media player didn't recognize. So, it asked me to type in the CD title and songs myself! Guess what, riptopia must have done that for me because it all came back perfect. So, considering that I can blow 100 bucks on one nice dinner with my wife out in town, I don't think spending 100 bucks to have have her and I enjoy everyone of our CD's on an i-pod or on our sonos system (we own both) is expensive. Now she listens to her music in the bedroom and I listen to mine in the living room. Oh... and might I add that she is much happier when she listens to her favorite songs. A husband can TRULY appreciate that! Now we listen to music that we bought years ago, we throw parties with all our favorite music ( and the CD's are stowed away forever). Cocktail party? Jazz collection; Game night?? 80's and 90's rock collection; Working out? House-music; Wrestling kids?? Lego-Bionicles soundtrack!! I'm telling you.. digital music and Riptopia are one of the few technology combinations that really make life more fun for us. Oh... one other thing, after reading the review saying that high-end players don't need this, I went to the Riptopia webpage cause my speakers and cables are very high-end. They offer a bunch of other formats and rates for higher prices. When I called to ask wbout it, the guy on the phone told me they had one customer with 16,000 CD's once. He was pretty picky too!

Summary: Encoding data rate may be too low for discerning listeners
Comment: As owner of a 600+ CD collection, I have been looking into ripping services in order to save time. Unfortunately, basic technical details are lacking in Riptopia's product description, namely the encoding data rate. From the mentioned "up to 100 CDs on one DVD" I conclude it's around 192 kbit/s. That may be enough when you play your music through an iPod or a Sonos, but with a hi-fi device like a Squeezebox a loss of quality is audible to discerning ears compared to the same CD encoded in lossless format (like FLAC or ALAC).

Provide Vital Album Information
Digital players allow a specific song or artist to be found in an instant--provided the album information embedded in the digital song is correct and consistant. Riptopia's CleanTag process embeds accurate music information, including vibrant album art, into the music files to simplify these searches. The process starts with a database of 70 million unique songs in 80 different languages from our partners Gracenote and Muze (The same data partners as Apple Music Store). CleanTag then combines a verification system and a team of musicologists to check the album data for accuracy and completeness. The result is easily searchable music that is accurate--important for rock and pop but critical for classical and jazz.
Back Up Your Digital Music
Riptopia delivers your new digital music library on high density data DVDs. Each DVD can hold up to 100 of your CDs. After uploading your music onto your computer, iPod, phone, or music server, the DVDs can be stored in case your digital player is misplaced or your hard drive crashes.
