Summary: Find something better
Comment: At first, I thought I was buying a low cost, low engergy network storage drive. Yes, it is low cost and it does consume less energy than my old tower computer I was using for network storage. However, now that I have it set up and running, this is not what I wanted.
First, you need to install a device driver on every computer that will access this device. This is insane! Your computer will not see this as simply network storage without the device driver.
Second, if you have pre-loaded hard drives - forget it - the driver needs to reformat each drive, so all you material is lost! Make sure you back everything up first.
Last - it's slow! Access time is very slow. I was running a WinXP machine as my network storage, and even with the operating system running in the background, that computer had much faster access to the data. I thought a dedicated unit would speed up transfer, but not with this device.
Look for a faster unit, pay some additional money. I'm disappointed.

Summary: Garbage. Shame on NetGear!
Comment: Been using the SC101 off and on since May of 2008 and all I can say is - NOT WORTH IT! I saw the negative reviews but bought anyway since it was reasonably priced. Even with a Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm drive with 16mb cache it is still very slow. However, thats not the real issue here. Serious and frustrating problem is it will routinely disappear from the network without rhyme or reason. Has dropped out of sight even after just using it and going back to save a document. The only thing that will bring it back is always a reboot of the router, and sometimes a reboot of the PC also needed. Its always the router first, that usually does it. If not the PC needs to be rebooted also and it will appear again.
I downloaded twice the latest firmware as the web site recommended but to no avail. NetGear has no solution. Shame on NetGear for releasing this device.

Summary: Basic NAS
Comment: Product works as advertised, easy to setup! It only has a 10/100 MB connection and an IDE interface so don't expect any high speed transfers. I installed two 500GB WD drives and backed up 250GB of data over a two day period without any problems. Finding this product may prove difficult becuase its almost at its end of life and not many stores carry it. I originally ordered mine from Amazon but the seller couldn't fulfill by order which worked out because Circuit City had it on clearance for $24.99.

Summary: What a piece of junk
Comment: I picked one of these up advertised as a NAS. Really it is not networked attached storage at all. In order to access the drives you need to install software onto Windows XP or higher machines. It does not work with OSX or any other system. Even then it rarely works. My Windows machine looses the connection to the F drive constantly. This was going to be the drive I download files too and it gets frustrating when you are halfway through a 4GB ISO file and the drive stops working and you either have to wait for it to start working again to resume or you have to start all over.

Summary: The SD101 is good for only holding papers in place
Comment: Purchased this with great hopes, but after loosing data (broken mirror), access requiring a Windows PC, proprietary disk format, and a software upgraded that literally Blue Screen of Deathed my computer I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
Do not buy this product!
